You might have seen them after school carrying people on their backs down the hall, dashing around the cross country loop, or sprinting up and down the main stairs. This group of hardworking athletes is the Knightdale Wrestling Team. As this new season is beginning, they obviously hit the ground running. Head Coach Von Hoene has very high expectations for this season. “The wrestling team should exceed the accomplishments of any prior KHS wrestling team.  I see a tremendous amount of potential.” Coach Von Hoene believes the KHS Wrestlers fully understand the challenge that is before them. He expects them to maximize their experience, talent, and past achievements with a focus on future performance and accomplishments. They have the ability and skill to win conference and to compete in the Regional Championship.  The team has come up with 4 goals they believe will help guide them to victory this season:

1. Pay attention to details:

    – Maintaining healthy/appropriate weights

    – Daily steps towards goals

2. Intensive drilling

3. Support from sideline

4. State Duals

This season, the team is looking forward to participating in some high profile events, such as competing in Virginia, WRAL Tournament, and Knightdale Duals. When asked about how the team stacks up against the competition in the area, Coach Von Hoene said “On paper or in theory we should be the team to beat (due to the comparably large numbers of returners that we have) but we haven’t earned anything yet and the season is still VERY young.  I hope that we are able to be competitive and outwork our opponents.” The team has high expectations and is working very hard to meet each and every one of them.

The Knights headed out to C.B. Aycock November 21st to participate in the 2009 Falcon Invitational Tournament. The team put up a great effort and ended up getting 4th place as a school. They also had several individual wrestlers place. Drew Lopez 119 lbs, Parker Baucom 130 lbs, Zack Russel 160 lbs, and Nick McClelland 171 all got 3rd place in their weight classes. Saul Vega 215 lbs, took home gold by placing 1st.

”The greatest waste in the world is the difference between what we are and what we could become.” – Ben Herbster
