Beneath Knightdale’s Bad Reputation
As a member of the Knightdale High School community, dealing with the school’s bad reputation is a constant battle. Unlike what many people think, KHS is not full of hooligans and gang bangers. There are also intelligent, hard working students trying to dispel the bad name of Knightdale and apathetic kids just like in any other school.
Parents hesitate to send their children to the school, and people in the community and around the county seem to think there is some form of violence going on every day at the school. But when walking through one of the hallways in Knightdale, it’s not the frightening circus act people seem to think it is. “I believe KHS has struggled, since opening, to establish a positive image in the county. I know we have wonderful students,” says Carla Jernigan, principal of Knightdale High School.
Although there is a behavioral issue and lack of respect in the student body, it is not confined to Knightdale only. Leah Robinson, a substitute teacher, feels it is today’s generation of kids. “Some young people are out of control. It’s a society problem; Knightdale is on the same footing as any other school in Wake County.”
The community and the media seem to only concentrate on the bad things that go on at Knightdale. They miss out on the positive things going on inside of the school, such as the award winning Marching Knights and theatre department. “I believe the school is a lot better than the community thinks. They don’t see what happens on the inside,” says Saul Vega, a senior at Knightdale.

The media sucks. It’s like none of the good things we do are ever shown to the public (like our amazing Drama club!), but the one or two bad things we do ARE shown to the public. How mean.
