Break the Break with EOC’s

David Gaston reviews with his class for a math EOC.

The two weeks of Winter Break have come and gone, and it’s time to exchange bathrobes and slippers for the forgotten book bags and gym shoes. Many of us may have drifted away from our usual school routine, and have gotten accustomed to waking up as late as possible without having to worry about standing in the cold to wait for the bus. Even as we stand and protest about going back to school, we all know we have to get to work, especially since the EOC’s have come early this year.

Winter Break took place from December 18th through January 4th. During those two weeks many students became too accustomed to their time off.  One student, Debrielle Boone did not want to go back to school because, as she said, “I got used to sleeping late.”  Tevin Curtis, another student at KHS felt that the Winter Break was not helpful to him because, “We [will not] have enough time to study for the EOC’s in class.”

Carlos Rodriguez, a Spanish instructor at KHS, felt that the Winter Break did not affect the students in a negative way.  He felt that the break was a chance for the students to relax before getting back to school. Rodriguez disagreed when he was asked if KHS was jumping into work to get ready for the EOC’s.  “There is nothing new,” he commented, “[We are] reviewing material that we have already learned.”

The two week of Winter Break served both as relaxation time and time to forget about previously learned school material.  While some students took advantage of that time to study for the upcoming EOC’s, others chose to simply waste their time.  With the EOC’s rapidly on their way, teachers like David Gaston, are trying to review as much as possible so that their students will be ready to take the test. But the question to ponder is: Will the Winter Break have any effect on the students’ EOC scores?
