Equal Education Strikes Knightdale

Equal education is such a hot topic among schools these days.  In fact,on January 26, 2010 town hall hosted a meeting about education in Knightdale High.  It focused mainly on presenting data about Knightdale High School, especially on AP and EOC testing scores.  Guests present at the meeting included Tim Simmons and Ann Denlinger from Wake Education Partnership, moderator Pam Mills, and Wake County commissioner Joe Bryan.  Knightdale High principal Carla Jernigan also attended to answer questions about the high school.   “I believe KHS has struggled, since opening, to establish a positive image in the county,” Jernigan told WRAL earlier this year.

Last year, Knightdale High School offered 15 AP classes.  Of the 15 offered, only 11 actually made the cut and became classes.  This is because the number of classes offered is based upon the different interests of the students.  “[The students] really drive what we offer,” states Jernigan.  Classes like Newspaper, Animal Science, and Holocaust/Genocide were selected by enough students last year and formed new classes.  With class registration approaching in the coming months, even more classes will be offered including the new class, Teacher Cadets.  Teacher Cadets is designed to train students who would like to pursue a career in the teaching field.

According to The College Board, most AP students only take one AP exam in four years.  AP English teacher, Laura Ingerham, believes that the majority of students taking AP classes are in the top 5-10% of their class.  When asked about why students take AP classes, Algebra teacher Lessie Anderson responded, “I think they take it for the GPA.”  Jernigan replied, “Kids really care more about being exposed to college classes, not the credit.”

Jernigan believes that Knightdale High School was the topic of discussion because, “We have some concerned citizens that want to see Knightdale students be more successful.”  According to EOC scores, Knightdale High is already showing some improvement.  Jernigan notes that there has been a 6-15 point increase in EOC scores on 10 out of 11 EOC courses.  In addition, the school also has the 2nd lowest drop-out rate in the county, thus making Jernigan feel like “[the students] believe in us.”
Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t still room for improvement.  Goals included in the school improvement plan include increasing student achievement in  math and reading, increasing attendance, and decreasing suspensions.  Since Jernigan became principal of Knightdale High, she feels that there is “more awareness of expectations.”  Hopefully, by the implementation of Start Smart, a new tardy policy, and an excellent staff, Knightdale High will continue to grow as a school.

Nice and well informed article, but it could use more different opinions and quotes from other people. Using Mrs. Jernigan so much seems a bit one sided, maybe asking students who took these new classes would have been a way to get student point of view. Overall though nicely done keep up the good work News Staff!
